Why Fargo Needs a Ward System

Local Government Should Feel Local.

Every part of Fargo deserves someone at City Hall who is accountable to it.

Fargo is made up of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own needs and priorities. A ward system would give every part of the city a council member who knows the area, listens to the people who live there, and is directly accountable for bringing their concerns to City Hall. Residents should know who represents their neighborhood and that representative should know their neighborhood.

As Fargo grows, every part of the city should grow with a voice.

Fargo is larger, more spread out, and more diverse in its neighborhood needs than it was when the current system was established. Decisions about taxes, development, public safety, roads, homelessness, and basic city services can affect different parts of Fargo in different ways. Wards would not settle every debate, but they would help make sure every area has someone at the table who understands how those decisions affect the people who live there.

Fargo makes better decisions when every part of the city has a voice.

City Hall decisions affect every part of Fargo, but they do not affect every neighborhood in the same way. Wards would ensure someone at the table understands how taxes, development, roads, public safety, and city services are affecting each area. When every part of Fargo is represented, the City Council can make better-informed decisions for the whole community.

A Responsible Update for Fargo’s Future.

Fargo can modernize its representation without losing focus on the services residents depend on.

Fargo’s commission form is the oldest form of municipal government in the country and is now used by fewer than 1% of American cities. That does not mean everything about Fargo’s government is broken, but it is fair to ask whether the current system still fits the city Fargo has become.

Moving to wards would require a transition, but it can be done responsibly while professional city staff continue delivering services and ongoing projects move forward.
